Oceanside wildlife control Tip of the Month:

A Description of the Life and Look of the Mexican Free-Tailed Bat
The Mexican free-tailed bat is also referred to as the Brazilian free-tailed bat. This animal is one of the most commonly found mammals in all of North America. This includes all types of animals, not just bats. While that may seem to be a good thing for the success of this animal, it is actually played a serious role in the decline of the Mexican free-tailed bat. There are often somewhere between 20 and 30 large colonies roosting somewhere in North America. They can literally live in colonies of millions of bats, which helps them to thrive, but also draws the attention of human beings. This often leads to extermination efforts or plans to disturb their habitat.

Where Are the Bats Found?
These bats are commonly found in areas like the southern United States all the way down through South America. There have even been large populations discovered in Utah and California, but these numbers are greatly declining as human beings have been eradicating their large nesting roosts. The largest known colony of these bats was found near San Antonio Texas, where an astounding 20 million bats were discovered. It was truly remarkable how large this colony was. Most of these bats live in caves. Several colonies have been found in abandoned buildings, usually in the top floors of the building. All that is needed is a sufficient amount of space for the colony to thrive, and they will take advantage of it.

What Do the Bats Look Like?
This bat is about 3.5" is in length and weighs about ½ an ounce. The tail is about half of the overall size of the animal, and it has an extremely sophisticated hearing system. This eco-location system helps it to be able to track prey from a long distance away. Most of these bats are either a really dark brown or gray in color. Their wings are elongated and have a pointed tip at the end of the wings. This gives them the ability to make quick movements and even to fly an extremely straight patterns.

What Do These Animals Eat?
The Mexican free-tailed bat is in insectivore. This means that primarily eat such things as dragonflies, wasps, flies, moths, beetles, and ants. Most of these insects are caught by the animal while it is in flight. This makes wasps, moths, and dragonflies the most common insect that this bat will eat. This species of bat can fly several hundred feet off the ground, allowing it to not only reach insects at high altitudes, but to also find large colonies of insects. While we most often think of bats as predators, they are the prey for several different kinds of animals. This includes such animals as raccoons, possums, owls, and hawks. While these animals pose a serious danger to the Mexican bat, it is human beings that have done the most amount of damage to them. The use of pesticides has caused these populations to greatly decline, but it has also crushed insect populations, hurting their primary source of food.
